We need to decide whether we want one or both of the sites, and if to keep both what goes in which. Don't want to duplicate events, for example.
We could investigate the possibility of including content from one site directly in another - e.g. the ning events in the 'principle' site

I think we can use a forum, depending on how many members are comfortable & used to using them. A few will be other wont. But its a good place for those that do to chat, leave messages & suggest ideas.
The email message of a forum post is important.
The Events Calendar looks good. The website is just a listing with no real calendar. Lets get it loaded in both & see.

You can get notified to forum posts by clicking the 'follow' button.
I'm keen on using something to keep my email inbox down. Personally I would subscribe to the various RSS feeds.
